A vegan or humane and cruelty-free product is one that does not come from any living creature, is not an animal byproduct and is not tested on animals. A vegan designer offers products, materials and fabrics that do not contain, harm, torture or exploit any living being and does not harm the planet. As the popularity of vegan food and diets grow, it has the design world thinking. Due to the growing popularity of veganism in food, consumers are beginning to look for vegan furniture, homeware, and fashion. As more products are developed and become readily available, vegan design will definitely become a norm.

A popular product being used as a leather alternative is Piñatex. Piñatex is a natural fiber made from the fiber of a pineapple leaf. The leaves themselves are discarded in the harvesting process so the material requires no additional environmental resources to produce it.
